Cockly, I enjoyed reading your post regarding the use of these two types of benzodiazepines in elderly patients. Working in behavioral health I have seen a few patients go through this paradoxical reaction to benzodiazepines and this is a situation that must be communicated across the care team in order to provide the patient with good quality care. Even though approximately less than 1% of patients who currently use benzodiazepines experience a paradoxical reaction, the advanced practice nurse should understand the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics behind why this is occurring in order to provide the appropriate care towards patients (Kirkpatrick et al., 2016).

Advanced practice nurses should also be able to recognize the individuals who are at an increased risk for developing paradoxical reactions to benzodiazepines in order to be increasingly observant in the initial phases of therapy for these individuals and determine best practice for how long the therapy should last.
