Understanding the effects of the drug on the body and how the body affects the drug are two important aspects to focus on when prescribing a medication to a patient (Arcangelo, Peterson, Wilbur, & Reinhold, 2017, Chapter 2). The purpose of this discussion is to discuss a patient scenario that can be related to the different pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics processes of the patient and what patient factors and history should be considered when making a care plan for the patient described.
Working in psychiatry there are many times in which a patient had an alternative reaction
to a drug that was administered in an emergency situation. One particular case that comes to mind involved a 15-year-old male who weighed 90kg who was agitated and aggressive. The provider ordered for the patient to receive 50mg of Benadryl via the intramuscular route, which was an appropriate dose for this patient based on their weight (Covenant Care Pediatrics, n.d.).
The desired effect was for that patient to calm down and decrease their aggressive behaviors. Unfortunately, the patient had the opposite reaction and showed an increase in aggression and hyperactivity with the administration of the medication. This patient was given Benadryl with the ….
