It is also important to understand your own leadership style, as this can prompt insight into how others relate to you and what skills you may need to develop as your leadership responsibilities grow. Review the information in the Learning Resources, including the leadership styles identified in Chapter 2 of the course text.
Bring to mind a leader in your organization or one with which you are familiar. Would you describe his or her style as authoritative, democratic, or laissez-faire? Why?
Which characteristics or approaches demonstrated by this person would you integrate into your own leadership style? Which ones would you prefer not to integrate?
Think about how this leader’s style and resulting interactions may impact health care quality and patient outcomes.
By Day 3
Post a description of a leader, distinguishing his or her style as authoritative, democratic, or laissez-faire. Describe the characteristics that inform your perception, and explain which ones you would integrate into your own leadership style, as well as which ones you would prefer not to integrate. Explain at least one potential effect of this leadership style on health care quality and patient outcomes.

The most recent manager I worked with is the nursing supervisor of the unit I work. Her leadership style is a combination of authoritative and democratic. She allows the staff to make decisions or solve problems on their own; however, when she sees fits she steps in to gain control of situations that may spiral out of control. When the staff is unable to make decisions on their own, she tends to give commands without acknowledging the staff; she will decide and control without the staff’s input. For example, when the charge nurse was unable to make a patient assignment because a nurse refused to take the assigned patient, she took over the assignment task from the charge nurse without the participation of the charge nurse. Then there are times when leadership is a shared role when working with her.
There are three types of leadership styles: authoritarian, democratic, and laissez-faire (Marquis & Huston, 2017) Authoritarian leaders are often found in large organizations; these leaders make decisions without the input of others, dictate commands, criticism is punitive, and they have a firm control over groups (Marquis & Huston, 2017). Democratic leaders involve shared decision making, control is minimal, and autonomy is high (Marquis & Huston). Laissez- faire leaders give their members freedom (Mind Tools, n.d). These leaders provide little or no direction; there is no control and decision making is dispersed throughout the group (Marquis & Huston, 2017).
All leadership styles are both non-beneficial and beneficial depending on the situation and team. However, I will instill both authoritative and democratic into my leadership style. Authoritative leadership style is appropriate when decisions need to be made quickly, and the staff’s input and agreement are not necessary for a desired outcome (Mind Tools, n.d). I find this style to be useful when there is a team that needs full direction. On the other hand, I desire to work with my team and hear their insights when making decisions. According to Mind Tools (n.d), staff tends to have high job satisfaction and high productivity with democratic leaders. I will prefer not to integrate a laissez-faire leadership style. I find that this type of style may cause frustration due to the lack of control. Laissez-faire leaders do not demonstrate leadership, they are uninvolved with their members, and they do not make group-related decisions (Flynn, 2013).
Effective leadership is an important component that leads an organization to productive and successful outcomes (Sfantou et al., 2017). Leadership styles such as democratic that allow the engagement of health care professionals have a lasting effect on quality and care provided to patients. According to Carol Wong, there are positive nurse and patient outcomes with democratic leadership because it “emphasizes the leader’s ability to create positive relationships within the organization” (Marquis & Huston, 2017 p. 40). Contrary to the effects of a democratic leader, authoritative leaders will ensure that the appropriate manpower and resources are in place to achieve optimal care quality and patient outcomes. All and all, democratic and authoritative leaders are often well-respected and can be influential to their team. Both styles can affect health care quality and patient outcomes increasing patient satisfaction and decreasing patient mortality.

In Week 10, you considered how ethical, moral, and legal dilemmas can provoke internal conflict when a nurse’s values are not in alignment with the apparent demands of a situation or with others’ values, as well as external conflict that can arise as these dynamics are played out. Of course, conflict can also emerge through seemingly simple issues of little consequence—little consequence, that is, except when they are not properly managed.
Nurse leaders need to be familiar with conflict management styles and the impact these styles can have on interpersonal dynamics, and, ultimately, patient care. For this Discussion, you evaluate a situation marked by conflict and consider how conflict management strategies could be applied to promote positive results.
To prepare:
Consider a conflict situation you witnessed or were engaged in within your practice setting. Then, proceed as follows:
Think about who was involved, how it was resolved (if it was), and how it might have been handled more effectively.
