NURS 3150 Week 2 Discussion Topic (Walden University)
Sample Week 5 Discussion Intro: In researching into this week’s discussion, I used the Medicare Hospital compare to assess how the facility that I used to work for is performing in relation to patient quality and safety. Healthcare professionals and patients have the ability to access over 4,000 hospitals nationwide to compare how each hospital measures up and patient can make a healthcare decision when it comes to choosing a hospital for their healthcare needs. I was surprised to see that the hospital I worked for had a rating of 2 out of 5 rating that includes up to 57 measure in the overall rating calculation even though they are Magnet designated up until 2018. However, I was inclined to find out how they measure up in some areas that are of interest to me knowing that some hospitals with high ratings may not show quality care in some areas as well. The three variables that I found this facility will benefit from areas of survey of patient experience, timely & effectiveness, complications & deaths, and unplanned hospital visits. After careful review of this areas of interest, the one sub category that I was pleased to see in the area of timely and effective care is the area of pregnancy and delivery of care. The quality measure applies to the Percent of mothers whose deliveries were scheduled too early (1-2 weeks early), when a scheduled delivery was not medically necessary was lower (0%)than the state (1%) and National average (2%). This facility again will need improvements in other areas in this Category in other to improve their overall rating score. The other Variable in the Category of complications & deaths that applies to Healthcare-associated infections, or HAIs, …

Writing a research paper involves literature review of multiple sources in efforts to develop a thesis. In nursing that thesis is generally focused on improving health care and patient outcomes, improving working conditions for professionals, or studying budget saving techniques. The purpose of literature review is not to conduct an argument nor is it to support the researcher’s opinions or views. It is intended to gain knowledge about previous research performed on the selected topic. (Grove et al., 2013). It also allows the researcher to discover elements to reconsider or areas that require further study. Discovering the most efficient ways to find valid and legitimate sources takes practice. As I become more familiar with various research designs, I realize that the goal of all methods of medical research is to optimize patient care by generating new knowledge while maintaining the rights and interests of any human subjects involved (Izet, Ajila, & Smaila, 2014). So much is considered for a valuable and reliable study. This week’s focus involved the influence of music on the anxiety level of preoperative female patients planning to undergo gynecologic surgery (Labrague & McEnroe-Petitte, 2016). After reading the assigned resources, I found myself critiquing the study in ways that I wouldn’t have prior to this course.

Developing a research study to maximize care for our patients and promote health and wellness within the community can be challenging. Choosing which type of research methodology to apply can be difficult if the researcher is unfamiliar with the characteristics of each type. Qualitative research is more difficult to analyze than quantitative research. With qualitative research it is impossible to precisely measure outcomes. It relates more to experiences and reasoning and involves an understanding of relationships between variables. Qualitative research may be described as somewhat of a starting point for further analysis of treatment or investigation of evidence based practices (EBP).

Week 5: Quantitative Analysis Assignment
Summary Data Analysis Form
This is the form you need to use to describe the findings (or results) of your quantitative analyses of the patient safety data set. For each finding, you are given specific instructions on how to use the Excel program to analyze the data that will give you the results you need for this Assignment. When you have completed the analyses and described your findings on this form, you then need to submit it using the Week 5 platform for assignments.

Week 5: Qualitative Analysis Assignment
Code Sheet: Student Pet Peeve Data
Qualitative Analyses: The analytic method you will use to analyze the narrative data for this Assignment is called content analysis. It requires you to read each student’s narrative and then code its content using the thematic categories on page 4 (Coding Scheme: Student Pet Peeve Data). Once you have completed the coding, you will need to describe the most common types of “pet peeves” that students have about their courses.
