Abstract

There is a critical need for scientific research in long-term care so that older people, their families, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and educators can profit from new developments and the best available evidence in daily care practices. The model of an interdisciplinary partnership involving researchers, healthcare professionals, and educators in long-term care is presented in this work: the “Living Lab in Ageing and Long-Term Care” by Maastricht University in the Netherlands. Its mission is to contribute with scientific research to improving

  1. quality of life of older people and their families;
  2. quality of care and
  3. quality of work of those working in long-term care.

Key working mechanisms are the Linking Pins and interdisciplinary partnership using a team science approach, with great scientific and societal impact. A blueprint for the model is discussed, describing its business model and challenges in getting the model operational and sustainable are discussed.

Translational Research

The term “translational research” describes the use of information from basic science, research, and clinical trials to solve medical needs and enhance health outcomes. To improve public health, translational research encourages the multidirectional integration of basic research, population-focused research, and patient-focused research (Curtis et al., 2017). Additionally, translational research incorporates the demands of the general population and actively involves the community in identifying the health concerns that require research (Titler, 2018). Using translational research, the best available medical and health practices to address the medical needs are then implemented according to the research findings.

As an operating room manager, translational research comes in handy, especially when implementing the best-practices and care delivery in the operating room. The patients in the operating room have different medical needs and therefore as the manager, I always ensure that the best-practices adapted for the care of these patients are informed by the research findings. Therefore, in my current setting translational research can be useful in addressing the medical needs of the surgical patients and ensuring that the patients are actively engaged and involved throughout the research process. In my future role as a nurse educator, I plan to use translational research to develop knowledge base valuable in preparing competent nurses capable of promoting and maintain wellness and care for patients using transformative transitions. Moreover, I plan to use transformational research to guide the designing of courses and programs in nursing education and also develop the best learning and teaching practices.

  2. Demonstrate understanding of scientific inquiry, knowledge generation, utilization, and dissemination in advanced nursing practice.
  3. Evaluate the evidence for potential solutions/innovations that can potentially solve a health care issue and improve patient outcomes.
  4. Identify gaps in nursing knowledge and evidence-based practice that can potentially be resolved by planning and implementing a practice change project.
  5. Formulate a clinically researchable question amenable to an innovative evidence-based practice change
  6. Write a scholarly literature review that supports a clinically researchable question amenable to an innovative evidence-based practice change proposal.
  7. Evaluate health policy and advocacy issues for the purpose of improving health care outcomes.
  8. Engage in scientific inquiry into the state of health care delivery, patient-centered care, and ethical principles related to health beliefs, health promotion, and risk reduction of diverse populations.
  9. Propose quality improvement initiatives that advance the delivery of safe, high-quality health care.
  10. Use principles from epidemiology, biostatistics, genetics, genomics, and cultural competence to guide comparisons of various patient populations.
