NU 310 HA Week 5 Discussion 1
Isolation Precautions are used for infections, diseases, or germs that are spread by touching the patient or items in the room. When performing a cardiac & respiratory assessment when a patient is on isolation the following precautions should be observed: (Infection Prevention and You, 2017)
For the cardiac assessment, I would first review the vital signs and see if anything is abnormal. Next I would look at the patient and see a few things. Is he in pain? Is he having obvious trouble breathing? Is he alert and oriented? Is his conjunctiva pale or pink? I would then inspect the neck and palpate for the carotid pulses. I would check peripheral pulses at this time including pedal pulses at the same time. Next I can place the bell of the stethoscope to listen for the swishing sound of the blood against the carotid arteries. The patient may have to hold his breath as to not interfere with the listening of the sound. Then I would proceed to inspect the anterior chest and listen to heart and lung sounds. (Jarvis 2012)
