NSG6999 W1 D6 – Prevention of Aspiration Pneumonia : Evidence-Based Practice Project Topic

My interest in the prevention of AP started while working in a Skilled Nursing Facility for patients with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of Dementia. I find this topic very interesting and would like to do further research that may decrease the incidence of AP. Several risks factors are associated with AP; some of them are susceptible to be modified by interventions in order to prevent AP in older adults (Izumi, Takeuchi, Ganaha, Akifusa, & Yamashita, 2016). AP represents 5–15% of all cases of community-associated pneumonia (Hofer, 2016). The mortality rates associated with AP are high; AP contributes greatly to mortality in the elderly population aged 60 years and over, causing about 15,000 deaths annually in the U.S adults (Hofer, 2016).
