Medical marijuana is a somewhat controversial topic, but the therapeutic benefits for the patient’s affected with chronic pain that is not responsive to other treatments far surpass the controversy. Medical marijuana is gaining acceptance from the popular vote as the studies prove the benefits for many medical conditions. Patient’s who have had no previous successful results with other treatment modalities have sought out providers with a medical marijuana license. I have taken particular interest in this topic because I see first hand how patient’s who are no longer therapeutic with the use of opiates for pain control or who would like to try an alternative therapy. The FDA regulates medical marijuana in the United States and only certain providers with a medical marijuana license are able to prescribe. Patient’s who are not surgical candidates, those with seizure disorders, anxiety, PTSD, fibromyalgia, cancer patients, AIDS related pain, and glaucoma all are eligible for being prescribed medical marijuana (U. S. Department of Health, 2019).

The primary chemical in the medical marijuana is cannabidiol, this is also the primary ingredient in CBD oil. CBD stands for cannabidiol and is a naturally occurring compound found in the cannabis flower (Project CBD, 2019). CBD oil is gaining popularity partly from the non-addictive therapeutic properties of pain and inflammation control.

An adjuvant analgesic is considered one that complements the current treatment regimen. However, since the treatment modalities are relatively new there is little evidence that will support the claims of therapeutic effects of chronic pain management (Portenoy, Ahmed, Keilson, 2019). My plan is to lead a study under a primary doctor who is licensed to prescribe medical marijuana to determine the efficacy of medical marijuana and the use of CBD oil to control pain.
