The one-word topic I am interested in researching is burnout.  As a nurse for twelve years, I understand the daily stress, life altering hours, and pressure felt to deliver quick and skilled care to patients.  It is a huge responsibility and nurses often go without bathrooms trips, breaks, or eating to give the best possible care to their patients.  I belong to a national nursing group on Facebook that shares stories, asks questions, and gives advice.  I am saddened to see nurses of all experience levels, with signs of burnout, considering leaving the medical field, and even more disturbed to see the advice given to them to cope: drink alcohol, move to a legal marijuana state, and find another profession.

I believe if teaching holistic care of self can be incorporated into student nursing curriculum and made available in the clinical settings for nurses, it could have a big impact on quality of life for nurses and lead to better outcomes for patients.  I am a firm believer you cannot take care of anyone else before you take care of yourself.  Nurses affected by burnout have described it as emotional fatigue, exhaustion, apathy, and loss of interest in their jobs (Del Carmen Pérez-Fuentes, et al, 2019).
