Spirituality provided the vehicle from moving patients emotional concerns to finding meaning and purpose in life (Devi & Fong, 2019). Cancer patients who willingly and freely express their spiritual needs are more likely to have less anxiety and depression, have a deeper meaning and experience a sense of personal growth and acceptance with their achievement in life. They are less likely to resort to drugs and alcohol as a source of comfort and has better control in managing their side effects of treatments.

This will be a challenging topic for me, but I am very interested in the spiritual aspect of my patients I see daily. In the last 4 years, more and more patients are willingly to discuss and share their spiritual freely with me and a times wants to pray before starting their chemotherapy. My goal in the future is create an atmosphere where patients can freely express their spirituality and religious belief without any discrimination.  Despite the negative views and opinions held by many mental health professionals, research examining religion, spirituality, and health has been rapidly expanding (Keonig, H. G., 2012).

My background questions are:

  1. What is spirituality?
  2. What is the connection between spirituality and religion?
  3. Does one’s spiritual beliefs has any major impact on their illness patterns?
  4. How does spirituality play a role in the mental and physical health of cancer patients?
  5. At what point during an illness patient tends to question their spiritual beliefs?
  6. Do individuals with a healthy spiritual identity heal faster and establish healthier lifestyles?
  7. How is the concept of spiritualty link to physical health and mental well-being?

My foreground questions will be related to my PICOT questions, considering my EBP question doesn’t focus on a treatment or prognosis but rather an outcome.

According to the World Health Organization, spiritual and religious dimensions of a patient’s life should be considered as integral components of total patient care (Devi & Fong, 2019). Studies have shown that cancer patients that are comfortable with their spirituality incline to be better handle their treatment, manage and deal with the side effects of therapy more effectively, and furthermore live a heathier and purposeful life compared to those patients who struggle to connect with their spiritualty (van Leeuwen, et al 2007). My strategy for getting a full understandings of this topic to explore and thoroughly research peer-review articles and  RCT’s on topic that specific related to and address spirituality in the healthcare arena and women dealing with cancer.
