This discussion considers the metaparadigm of nursing and the four concepts of the nursing profession—person, environment, health and nursing profession.  Select a practice area of the nursing profession (i.e. education, executive, informatics, healthcare policy, and advanced clinical practice) and apply EACH of the four concepts to the selected area.  Be sure to apply EACH of the four concepts and include an example that demonstrates the application to the practice area.  Don’t forget to support your initial posting with scholarly references.

NR 501 Week 2 Significance of Nursing Concepts Assignment Example

Dr. Carol and fellow classmates,

Healthcare policy is the decision, plans, and actions that are undertaken to achieve individual healthcare goals and objectives within a community or culture. According to Fawcett (2012), an explicit health policy can fulfill several objects in the health department since it defines a vision for the future, describes different priorities and the expected roles of various groups.

There are different categories of health policies, including public health policy, healthcare service policy, global health policy, and insurance coverage. However, there are also policies related to public health such as breastfeeding promotion policy and vaccination policy or tobacco control policy. Besides, many types of health systems exist centering on the financing of healthcare service to spread the economic risk of diseases. These comprise of publicly funded health care and entire capitalization of personal health care services through private companies (Fawcett, 2012 NR 501 Week 2 Significance of Nursing Concepts Assignment).

Environment

The meta-paradigm environment comprises of both external and internal factors related to the patient (Fawcett & Russell, 2001, p. 110). The environment includes the patient’s significant others, surroundings, and the nursing practice delivery system (Fawcett & Russell, p.110). Various health care policies do not only strengthen the bonds between nurses and patients, but also between medical staff and nurses. Hence, it is vital for patients to feel more comfortable when establishing patient environments.

Health

According to Fawcett & Russell (2001), the meta-paradigm of health refers to the quality and wellness of patients, families, groups, and communities (p. 110). Health care policy is significant in achieving health since it assists nurses to take a universal approach with patients. Furthermore, it is essential in assessment where it is necessary for nurses to assess patients based on their right to health policy and individual needs to maintain optimal healthcare.

Person

The meta-paradigm of person centers majorly on the patient who is the recipient of care and may comprise of the individual’s culture, family, and friends or even their socioeconomic status. Therefore, health care policy in meta-paradigm of person enhances the practice of satisfying human wants through human care since every individual has his or her own and unique and unpredictable set of wants (Lee, 2013 NR 501 Week 2 Significance of Nursing Concepts Assignment).

Nursing

In this meta-paradigm, it not only refers to the nurse and how he or she will apply the knowledge and skills in caring for patients but also relates to the attributes of the nurse who is proving the care (Lee, 2013). According to Fawcett & Russell (2001), nursing in the health policy arena focuses on nursing practice processes of assessment, labeling, planning, implementation, and evaluation (p. 110). Health care policy is dominant in nursing since it is essential for nurses to establish proper service delivery that focuses on providing quality services to the patient which makes them feel safe and cared for their health conditions.

In conclusion, nursing in the healthcare policy arena is a growing field with several practice settings. Nurses can influence existing health policies on nursing practices and outcomes, as well as guide innovative nursing practices with the development of new health policies.

Dr. Carol,

I agree regarding your assertion on how APRN’s are hindered by scope of practice restrictions and barriers to obtaining similarity in reimbursement. These challenges can be removed through policy advocacy. To ensure that all Americans have access to needed health care services and that nurses’ unique contributions to the health care team are maximized, federal and state actions are required to update and standardize scope-of-practice regulations to take advantage of the full capacity and education of APRNs (Mund, 2017, p. 212-213).

Removing regulatory and financial barriers to promote patient-centered care should be foundational in the building of a reformed health care system. Therefore, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services should ensure that its rules and polices reflect the evolving practice abilities of licensed providers, rather than relying on dated definitions when physicians were the only authorized providers of a wide array of health care services (Mund, 2017, p. 213). Master’s prepared nursing programs should equip professional nurses with the skills and knowledge to feel confident in their ability to influence policy changes.

Reply to Student;

Bomnie,

The nursing profession has an obligation to strengthen skills that enable them to influence policy so they can better serve patients. I agree the nursing profession has a growing role in the health policy arena as nurses are assuming leadership roles in health policy advocacy, research, analysis, policy development, implementation, and evaluation. To create widespread change in the health care system, nurses need to research, develop, fund, and implement policies that support quality improvement (Mund, 2017, p. 189).

Master’s prepared nurse programs should be equipped to prepare APRN’s to understand the legislative process and prepare to influence policy changes at the local, state, and national levels. As a member of the nursing profession involved in the policy development process, the nurse has the opportunity and the responsibility to provide accurate and up-to-date information.

A nurse involved in the policy development and implementation process must be prepared to discuss the issues factually, that information be based on credible research, and that facts be double checked and presented in a succinct manner using easily understandable language (Mund, 20107 pp. 190-191). The foundational courses we take now can prepare us to take legitimate seats at the various tables where healthcare decisions are made so we can incorporate experiences and insights into the healthcare dialogue. Dr. Carol and classmates,

I agree with many of you that to provide well-rounded holistic care to patients, nurses must utilize each of the metaparadigms and use current evidence-based interventions available to treat and educate the patient and the families. Prevention of disease and injury and promotion of wellness are essential components of emergency nursing practice and emergency care and have the potential to benefit patients and their families, the ED environment, and the greater community by slowing the progression of disease. I do feel that health and person are reciprocal in emergency care.

Emergency nurses are in a unique position to assist persons with or at risk for disease and injury. For many individuals, the emergency department may be their only source of care, and thus their only opportunity to receive healthcare services. Chronic disease and injury are especially prevalent in the emergency care setting. ED nurses must thrive on change and embrace art, science, ethics and the use of self. However, this constantly changing environment can cause many problems or nurses working in it. NR 501 Week 2 Significance of Nursing Concepts Assignment

Week 2 Assignment: Reflective Essay

Guidelines with Scoring Rubric

Purpose

Nursing knowledge is classified in a variety of ways, one of which is Carper’s Patterns of Knowing (Carper, 1978).  Carper’s framework offers a lens through which the nurse can reflect upon insights acquired through empirical, ethical, personal, and aesthetic knowledge (Carper, 1978).  Through intentional reflection using Carper’s Patterns of Knowing, nurses can process experiential learning and knowledge acquired through practice.  The purpose of this assignment is to reflect upon a specific practice situation and better understand the professional knowledge and insights obtained through that experience.
