2. Lecture signature assignment; Journal Article Review (written only report);

Group of 3-4 students will choose one article from a primary scientific literature source which uses a microbe as a model organism/system and write a comprehensive summary of the study that answers the following questions (A/B/C/D/E):

A) Why did the scientists perform the study (i.e. description of background)?

B) What was the hypothesis (or hypotheses) under investigation?

C) I; what were the major results and did they support or negate the hypothesis?II; which key techniques were used to achieve these results?

D) Why are the results significant and do they point to further/future studies? In other words, why does this article matter and what should or could be done next?

E) Why did you choose this particular article to review? Was it interesting, informative, clearly written, or none of the above?

The lecture journal article review is a written only report and has to be in scientific format and cannot exceed 3 pages (not including the cover page and the reference page). An abstract will not be necessary. One hard copy of the report per group, with the specific article that was used to do the report stapled to the back, has to be turned in to the instructor. Each student in the group should indicate their lab section next to their name. One person in the group has to turn in an electronic copy of the report through blackboard assignment post and put an asterisks next to their name on the cover page of hard copy.
