SAMPLE WEEK 5 BENCHMARK SOLUTION

Abstract

Improving patient outcomes and overall patient satisfaction should be one of the most important goals of the allied health professional and other health professionals alike. The following will explore the importance of population health, the need to educate and involve patients in one’s own ongoing care, as well as explore ways to motivate and encourage individuals to enter the medical field as an allied health professional.

Benchmark – Planning Better Health for the Future

Population Health

Population health can be defined as the health outcomes of any given group of people. These groups can be broken up by an entire country, state, city, certain ethnic groups, by disability, and so on. The health of the population today sets the standard for the type of health care needs the population will need in the future. For example, certain chronic illnesses that are affecting the population now will continue to affect the population in the future, thus, affecting the type of long-term care treatment and/or facilities those patients will need access to. However, there are other health factors that affect the population such as genetic factors, behavioral factors, and social and economic factors that are not as easily tracked and able to plan for. Instead of looking for ways to prevent health disparities from occurring, it is much easier to plan for illnesses and diseases that have and will continue to happen based on these disparities, which is why planning for the future is something health professionals have struggled with in the past.

Population-based strategies should focus on universal, selective, and indicated preventative interventions. A universal preventative measure focuses on the population as a whole; a selective preventative measure focuses on a high-risk individual within a subgroup of a population; and an indicated preventative measure focuses on an individual who has a risk factor, or abnormality that suggests he/she is at high risk for the development of disease (Institute of Medicine, 2002). For example, population-level strategies have been effectively used in terms of tobacco use prevention due to the identification of various factors of health that effect not just the individual but the population; when this happens, the adoption of national policy takes place and change inevitably begins to happen. Looking at various social determinants that affect the health and well-being of the population, such as the use of tobacco, and creating national policy as a response can and will affect the well-being of the future population.

Along with population-based strategies, is the need for individual patients to take charge in one’s own health and well-being through patient activation.

Patient Activation

Physicians and allied health professionals deliver patient-centered care by providing patients with information regarding his or her health and the patient then takes the opportunity to change his or her lifestyle for the betterment of their health. Once a patient makes the decision to be actively involved in making conscious health decisions, engaging in physical activity and changing one’s diet is he or she is identifying with patient activation (Shi & Singh, 2019). This type of care is changing the face of healthcare. In this type of care setting, physicians and health care professionals are becoming more involved in and taking the time to understand patients’ needs and predilections. In most cases, once a patient recognizes that the health care professional is directly invested in his/her health, it’s as if a switch has flipped and the patient in turn becomes more invested as well.

Patient activation has proven to enhance health outcomes and, subsequently, lower the cost of care. Patients begin to realize how important it is to lead a healthy lifestyle and become more engaged in everyday decisions that may eventually affect the future of his/her life. Education, assistance and reassurance are all vital aspects in the promise of patient activation. It is the duty of the allied health professional to provide patients with all of the education necessary to make important, informed decisions such as taking the first step in creating a better lifestyle for oneself.

A Career as an Allied Health Professional

Choosing to become an allied health professional is not a choice that most individuals make lightly – hours upon hours of training, studying, and never knowing what the day will bring are upon the many factors that one takes into account when deciding to go along this career path. Allied health professionals are dedicated to providing excellent patient care while sacrificing time with their own families, sacrificing weekends and holidays, and missing out on memories that can never be replaced.

Currently, there is a shortage of health care professionals and little to no vision in inspiring and motivating those to take on this challenge. One thing that can be done to motivate and inspire individuals thinking about going into the healthcare field is providing tuition reimbursement and promising entry-level employment and/or on the job training upon graduation. Being that training and taking the necessary course requirements to qualify for this type of employment is so time consuming and costly, a promise of some sort of employment and help in repaying student loans in this immensely growing field is all the motivation one would need in beginning this journey. Students embark on years of training with no promise of employment and still work day in and day out to complete courses, achieve baccalaureate and doctoral degrees, and become fully competent and knowledgeable in providing patient care – the least thing that colleges, hospitals, and federally funded facilities can do is provide a chance for growth and development through employment and on the job training.

Conclusion

Of all things discussed in this paper, one thing remains apparent – education is a necessity. Education is necessary in assessing population health, patient activation, and becoming an allied health professional. Education can and will always provide an avenue for improvement in terms of population health, in providing patients with information in taking charge of their own lives and taking the opportunity to change the lives of patients by becoming an allied health professional.
