Assignment: Socioemotional development in early childhood

Exam 2, Part 2 (Take Home)

You are currently working at a hospital (as a child psychologist, nurse, occupational therapist, educator, or art therapist).  A donation of $500 has been given to the hospital by a benefactor specifically for the sole purpose of outfitting a learning and play center for toddlers and young children who are in the hospital long term.  A room has been provided for this purpose, and the donor has also given money to pay a preschool teacher and additional staff as needed.

The hospital has asked you to join a team of other specialists to outfit this room with toys and other supplies that will be engaging and developmentally appropriate for these children (ages 2-7).

First, search the Internet (Toys-r-Us, Amazon, etc.) to find appropriate supplies (toys, art supplies, electronics, etc.) that would address the interests of a diverse group of children, engage them cognitively, and be developmentally appropriate.

You are to write a proposal to the other members of the team with your suggestions.  You will provide a list of the items you think would be most appropriate for this center, listing the prices and not exceeding the $500 you were given, but getting as close as possible to that number.

In this proposal, you will provide a rationale for your decisions.  Explain the reasons you think your choices are appropriate, specifically referring to concepts that adhere with specific theories.  In your proposal, include clear reference and clear knowledge of the following:

  • At least two of the following domains of development: physical, cognitive, socioemotional, and language.
  • Along these lines, you are to recommend materials and activities that are appropriate with the age group whose development you are supporting;
  • Explicitly indicate how the materials and activities are consistent with the theory or theorists whose core beliefs you are promoting.

It is important that your response indicate that you understand the concepts and ideas of the theory.  As an example, when discussing how certain toys might aid children in their language development, your response will need to use concepts presented in your textbook or in classroom lectures with a clear indication that you understand the concepts and can apply them specifically to the choices you make.  This would be true of the other areas of cognitive development mentioned above as well.
