In the past few years, addiction professionals have been experimenting with finding new ways to motivate clients to engage in their treatment. Most clients do not begin therapy knowing the extent of the problems that their use has caused them. The Stages of Change model created by Prochaska & DiClemente (1982) helps professionals to understand their clients’ attitude towards working on recover. The Motivational Interviewing model came from this model to help professionals to use specific treatment strategies.
