Week 2 Assignment 1 Discussion/Dq What Hopes Have We -South University

Assignment Introduction and Context

According to Ecclesiastes 3:3, there is a time to kill and a time to heal. How, then, is one to discern which is which? In our contemporary medical system, some would portray human life as almost infinitely extendable. If we could just find the right combinations of medications and therapies to be applied, even to those who are experiencing a life-threatening (i.e., terminal) illness, we could sustain them indefinitely (or so we imagine). With such options, though, what are the deciding factors in whether we seek greater quantity or greater quality of life? How do we discern for ourselves, and what do we advise others, with regard to those decisions?

For this assignment, make sure you post your initial response to the Discussion Area by Week 2, Day 3.

To support your work, use your course and text readings and also use the South University Online Library. As in all assignments, cite your sources in your work and provide references for the citations in Turabian format.

Start reviewing and responding to at least two of your classmates’ posts and consider commenting on differences and similarities between how you gather facts and how your classmates gather facts. Think about the language you use to comment constructively on other students’ posts.

Participate in the discussion by asking a question, providing a statement of clarification, providing a point of view with a rationale, challenging an aspect of the discussion, or indicating a relationship between two or more lines of reasoning in the discussion. Cite sources in your responses to other classmates. Complete your participation for this assignment by Week 2, Day 7.

Tasks

Hope, as discussed by Kubler-Ross (p. 149ff), would seem to emphasize what Gawande refers to as the long tail of potential life extension that often focuses on the very slim possibilities of cure or even prolonged life, to the exclusion of any preparation of the patient and family for the very high probability that the outcome will be less satisfactory.

In 400-500 words, post to the Discussion Area your response to the following:

  • Respond to both these competing claims:
    • First, for some, that it is heartless to rob a patient of his or her hopes of miraculous or medical intervention that may greatly prolong his or her life.
    • Second, for others, that it is cruel to subject the patient to futile therapies that have almost no chance of improving his or her condition and, instead, rob the patient of the opportunity to prepare and participate in a higher quality of life, albeit for a shorter time.

Support your point of view with research, readings, personal experiences, and/or scripture references.

Give your opinion and support from the Bible as well as course reading (or another scholarly book) and/or a scholarly article. Scholarly text is defined as coming from a publishing house, a peer-reviewed journal, a commentary, etc. What is not wanted is for a citation to be supported by an online blog or a personal website. Each post must demonstrate critical thinking and provide support from the readings or outside material, including workplace experience.

Week 2 Assignment 1 -Religion and Medicine

Participation

Read all of your fellow classmates postings and respond to at least two of your classmates posts. All responses should be respectful but critical in scholarly thinking. Responses should be between 100-150 words. Responses must begin by naming the individual to whose post you are responding along with one sentence that summarizes his or her point. This way, a person reading your post will understand to whom you are responding. Consider commenting on how others unique background and perspectives bear on their evaluation of one or both of the competing claims presented above.
