HLTH 3105 Week 1 Discussion

After reviewing the case study, it covered a lot of different health professionals that were involved in the case.  In addition to those listed, a Physician Assistant and Nutritionist could have also participated in her care.

SAMPLE

Physician Assistants practice medicine under the attending physician and surgeon (Laureate Education, Inc., 2010).  They provide services as delegated by the doctor such as progress notes, counsel and ordering therapy (Laureate Education, Inc., 2010).  Since this was a teaching hospital, she likely encountered a Physician Assistant due to these hospitals having large volumes.  In addition, a nutritionist could have been involved.  Since patients tend to tolerate treatment better when they are well-nourished, this would play a significant role since she was going to have chemotherapy which damages not only the cancer cells but healthy cells as a side effect (PDQ® Supportive and Palliative Care Editorial Board, 2017).

A Physician Assistant and a nutritionist is a valuable asset to an interdisciplinary team.  Both professional contribute important aspects to a patient’s health.  For example, a Physician Assistant monitors the patient progress and can diagnose complications or additional symptoms.  In addition, the Physician Assistant can then prescribe additional treatment to ensure their patient remains healthy while updating the attending on the situation, improving the continuity of care within the system.  Another example would be concerning the nutritionist.  A healthy patient can battle illnesses better than an unhealthy one.  When it comes to chemotherapy, it can make you nauseated among other side effects.  Being able to create nutritional meals for the patient is critical in keeping them healthy and can lower side effects and keep up strength and energy (PDQ® Supportive and Palliative Care Editorial Board, 2017).

Therefore, everyone contributes in a different way to a patient’s health when dealing with cancer.  There are many people involved in their care, and each one contributes differently but is just as important.  It can be something as little as a conversation that keeps a patient spirit up during difficult times and with working as a team, everyone can help a patient come through those tough times.
