HLTH 3105 Discussion Week 6

In our project, our patient had to deal with an osteomyelitis infection that occurred due to complications of a farming accident where the patient fractured his right leg.  Osteomyelitis is caused by bacteria or fungus and can occur after a bone injury (Ehrlich, 2016).  In order to eradicate the infection, it often involves a prolonged, challenging course of management, since the infectious process is typically resistant to conservative short course antibiotic measures (Fang & Galiano, 2009).

Traditionally, chronic osteomyelitis is treated with IV antibiotics and surgery depending on the severity of the infection (Ehrlich, 2016).  However, there are complementary therapies in addition to the traditional treatment of treating the infection with prescription antibiotics (Ehrlich, 2016).  For example, in addition to the antibiotics, the patient can take supplements and herbs to strengthen their immune system to fight the infection (Ehrlich, 2016).  Also, the patient can ask their doctor if an infusion of herbs is appropriate for their condition and to help abscesses heal, a botanical paste can be made to help treat the infected area (Ehrlich, 2016).

Even though the nonsurgical model has not been widely used due to perceived lack of desired results, even though still in its infancy, the studies are showing promising results (Fang & Galiano, 2009).  The benefits of using complementary approaches as such in conjunction with traditional methods are that it can bolster the host response against an infection and speed up the healing process, possibly preventing other complications (Fang & Galiano, 2009).  When you combine both approaches, you can achieve a faster and better-quality result for the patient compared to only traditional methods that come with additional side effects.
