The topic of research interest I have selected is, the aging prison population. I suggest this journey for research due to observations of (a) growing numbers of incarcerated individuals are entering the penal system at a more mature age; (b) with current (mandatory) minimum sentencing those convicted are receiving lengthy sentences; and (c) I am puzzled (at times) and intrigued on other occasions on the circumstances and/or actions resulting in incarceration.

After reading this week’s resources I was drawn toward the philosophical orientation of a constructivist; simply, or not so, due to the facets of truth being abstracted through individual interaction, through individual exchanges knowledge is validated, producing socially accepted facts; and through a qualitative, action based approach can observations be championed into socially acceptable facts (Burkholder, Cox & Crawford, 2016).

Good post, HPD would be a great research to conduct. According to the American Psychiatric Association, (2013) Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD) is a cluster B personality disorder that can be defined as attention-seeking emotions, usually beginning in early adulthood, including inappropriately seductive behavior and an excessive need for approval (Cale & Lilienfeld, 2002). This disorder has been known to be present in more than 40 percent of patients but only affects 2% of the population. There is also a high tendency for those diagnosed with this disorder to be female rather than male. (APA, 2013).

Qualitative and quantitative models would produce accurate results but research such as this would be better conducted using mixed methods. This method can be used to describe something qualitatively, as in the form of a description of something new or a unique set of circumstances. They also use quantitative mechanics to provide statistically useful information that can be generalized to other situations (Burkholder & Crawford, 2016).
