In Chapter 8 we learn about the human development which included physical and cognitive development. The Chapters we reading on cognitive development are the most interesting to me because of my youngest son whom has Autism. “Autism is a pervasive neuro-developmental condition which effects a persons ability to communicate and interact with others. People with Autism may have a difficult time understanding “typical” social cues and social behaviors, and they may face challenges engaging those around him – either by using words or non-verbal behavior.”

My son reminds of the character Arnie, played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie “Whats Eating Gilbert Grape”. Arnie has autism just like my son. In the movie Arnie is anxious through the whole movie because he is going to be celebrating his eighteenth birthday. Though he is going to be celebrating his eighteenth birthday he is basically still in the preoperational stage mostly but, i think he sometimes shows signs or behaviors of being in the concrete operational stage. Preoperational State of Development Discussion.

Arnie is unable to fully understand and empathize with peoples feelings which would put him in the preoperational state of development. Arnie also like to play hide-n-seek with his brother Gilbert, played by Johnny Depp. Arnie playing hide-n-seek shows he understands the concept of hiding and finding things. Even though most of the time he is hiding somewhere obvious, he still gets the concept of the game which shows his concrete operational stage.

Classmate 2:

The theme of chapter 8 is raising children. It was a difficult topic for me because I was the only child in the family and I was lonely in my childhood. But there is still a point I should make it clear. I’ve even noticed that the situation in China is even more difficult, which is also a very typical problem of child rearing in the rapid development of China’s economy — left-behind children. We can understand the meaning of the word “left-behind”, that is to say, in order to get better job opportunities, their parents leave their hometown, leave the children in the home, and the children usually live with their grandparents. Every year, millions of children are left behind.

Typically, these children can see their parents once a year — only during the Spring Festival, or for years they cannot see each other. This is a serious social problem. As mentioned in the textbook, children’s psychological condition will be affected by their living conditions, especially their parents, and this effect will continue until they grow up. I read some newspapers saying that some companies have sent some happy programs to the left-behind children. This is indeed a generous campaign for poor children, but the root of the problem cannot be changed. We should pay more attention to children’s education because its side effects are beyond our cognition. On the other hand, the influence of their own families can be transmitted to the families they have established with others. Worse, the effect lasts for three generations.
