Many times, people take herbal remedies because they believe that herbs can provide positive results without serious side effects.  A downside to herbal remedies is that plants produce a wide variety of chemicals that might have an effect that may be good or bad.  Herbal remedies are not evaluated by the FDA and people don’t always have access to information regarding herbal products. The reason that Emily has become pregnant taking St. John’s Wort with her oral contraceptive is because of the interaction that takes place between the two medications (Rahimi & Abdollahi, 2013).

When an oral contraceptive is taken as prescribed, it is more than 99% effective.  Oral contraceptives work by suppressing ovulation and if there is no egg released, there is nothing to be fertilized by the sperm.  St. John’s Wort is an herbal medication that is believed to help depression but is believed to increase breakthrough bleeding.  It is recommended that if you’re taking an oral contraceptive with St. John’s Wort that you use a condom as well (Rahimi & Abdollahi, 2013).
